A few selected Facebook users have recently spotted a new ‘rocket ship’ button in their mobile app, alongside the News Feed button. It appears differently on IoS or Android but tends to be at the top or bottom of most menu bars.
It effectively seems to be a second feed of content Facebook thinks you might enjoy which is currently in a trial version. It will be based on pages and content you have shown an interest or affinity too but without that necessarily meaning that they are pages you have directly ever engaged with. This content will be carefully curated and chosen by Facebook for you rather than by yourself.
A Facebook spokesperson told WIRED: “We are testing a complementary feed of popular articles, videos, and photos, customised for each person based on content that might be interesting to them. We’ve heard from people that they want an easy way to explore new content they haven’t connected with yet.”
So far..so good is what we can say. It all seems pretty exciting to us and following some of their recent tweaks and changes, we are all looking forward to seeing what Facebook has planned. Having spoken to a number of people in the industry myself, it seems to be based on Instagram’s explore Tab (a company also owned by Facebook) providing essentially a “search” button to Facebook users linked to their previous activity and providing content of similar tone.
It’s not known at this stage whether the rocket will end up being rolled out – still being in a trial stage – but the excitement is rising and personally (As it also appears on my feed) I can defiantly say it is very meticulously curated to my “likings” throughout my “Facebook history”.
