According to psychologist Robert Cialdini, Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Arizona State University, the key to persuasion is as much about timing as it is about the message itself. He describes this idea as “pre-suasion”, which is also the title of his new book. The text builds on his pioneering text influence which was released in 1984 and sold 3 million copies across the world. In the book, he laid out the six key principles of influence. The first tenet “reciprocity” is the idea that people return a favor that’s why retailers give out free samples and “commitment and consistency” suggests that we are more likely to follow through with an idea if we agree to it aloud or in writing. The third tenet is “social proof” which suggests that most of us are likely to repeat the actions of others, followed by “authority: which describes our leaning to obey…

For those of you who thought Instagram was going to stop copying Snapchat features in 2018, here’s a surprise for you. Now, Instagram is reportedly trying out a new app feature — one that has already been in existence in Snapchat — the feature that notifies a user when someone’s taken a screenshot or screen recording of your stories. Tech news site WABetaInfo stated that Instagram is trying out this new feature, but only “in-house”. The tech website had earlier reported on Instagram testing a new word-focused tool called “Text” which can be used in the app’s stories section. According to WABetaInfo, a unique icon will appear next to a person’s name if they take a screenshot or recording of your story. Sure, it is a replica of Snapchat’s exacts same, but at least it’ll help you find out who is stalking you and also being creepy about it. At…

In May 2016, less than two years ago, Facebook reported that people spend an average of 50 minutes a day on its apps- Facebook, Whatsapp and Instagram. This figure was seen as a sign of the tech’s giant astonishing growth as well as increasing influence over our lives. But on the web, two years is a really long time. On the 1st of February, Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s CEO reported that users are spending in total 50 million hours less a day on Facebook. This works out to about a 5% reduction in time spent per person. Facebook described the decline as a good thing, resulting from recent changes made to the newsfeed which decreased the number of viral videos users see, and encouraging sharing with friends and family. However, Zuckerberg failed to comment on how confident he was that the changes were not as a result of some other reason,…

In a recent interview with The Telegraph, Josh Silverman, new CEO of Etsy discussed giving the company a much-needed shakeup. As part of a lean marketing strategy, Silverman scrapped all marketing activities which aren’t likely to result in immediate results for Etsy’s vendors – including TV advertising – to focus on driving performance instead. These changes have begun to produce immediate results with a share price increase of 50%, and in the third quarter of 2017, they experienced a 13% increase in earnings. While this culling technique might be too extreme for some businesses, marketers can gain some valuable lessons from Etsy’s decision to ‘focus on the fundamentals.’ A lot of brands still plough the lion’s share of their creative resources and budget on top-funnel awareness campaigns, while neglecting the hugely important latter stages of the purchase funnel- continuing to drive their customers from expensive advertising campaigns to online stores…

Yikes! You’ve done it. On the spur of the moment you’ve gone ahead and followed all your colleagues on Twitter, and they have followed back. Now, there’s no going back. Everything has changed, and before you go on tweeting as before, there are some important rules you have to be aware of. DO NOT POST SLACK CONVO WITHOUT PERMISSION Thought your casual conversation with your workplace BFF was hilarious? Good for you. But, before you go ahead posting a screenshot for the world to see, take a second to consider whether your colleague would be cool with the world reading something he might consider private. GIVE THE ENIGMATIC PERSONAL TWEETS A SECOND THOUGHT If you feel a continuous urge to tweet sentimental song lyrics, and mysterious statements about your issues like to say a heartbreak, please refrain. Your colleagues are not going to favorite your 12 am “if they don’t…

In recent years, social media has evolved from being just a tool for entertainment and connecting with friends and loved ones. Today, it also functions as a powerful business and political tool, with immense potentials for social architecture. Just like any other tool, the application of social media platforms in business and politics can be for good or for bad. On one hand, social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter has allowed businesses and political groups connect with their target audience at a more personal level. However, these social media sites have also created an avenue for corporate and political entities to engage in propaganda, hate speech, deceit and incursion into the privacy of social media users. The extent to which social media can be used to influence opinion is most noticeable in the political arena, and a case in point was in the recent US Presidential elections where it…

Staying up-to-date with what’s new in Facebook News Feed is beginning to feel like a fulltime job. First, Facebook announced that they would be reducing the percentage of news on our newsfeed from 5% to 4%. Then they said they would “boost” trustworthy news sources. Now they say they will prioritize news from local outlets. These changes are coming amid accusations that Facebook algorithms prioritized misleading news and misinformation, thereby influencing politics in the US and other parts of the world. This latest addition will allow users see more posts from local sources. This way they can see “topics that have a direct impact on you and your community and discover what’s happening in your local area.” This means “if you follow a local publisher or if someone shares a local story, it may show up higher in newsfeed.” This update is to launch first in the United States before…
