An increase in hate speech, extremism, fake news and other content which violate the community standards has seen them strengthening policies, re-working algorithms and adding staff to curb the menace. In this article, we examine what works with algorithms and what doesn’t as relates to social moderation. Online platforms are plagued by inappropriate texts, images, and videos which somehow manage to slip through the cracks. In many cases, online media platforms respond by implementing smarter algorithms to help identify inappropriate content. In recent years, social media has evolved from being just a tool for entertainment and connecting with friends and loved ones. Today, it also functions as a powerful business and political tool, with immense potentials for social architecture. Just like any other tool, the application of social media platforms in business and politics can be for good or for bad. On one hand, social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter has allowed businesses and political groups connect with their target audience at a more personal level. However, these social media sites have also created an avenue for corporate and political entities to engage in propaganda, hate speech, deceit and incursion into the privacy of social media users. The extent to which social media can be used to influence opinion is most noticeable in the political arena, and a case in point was in the recent US Presidential elections where it…

Staying up-to-date with what’s new in Facebook News Feed is beginning to feel like a fulltime job. First, Facebook announced that they would be reducing the percentage of news on our newsfeed from 5% to 4%. Then they said they would “boost” trustworthy news sources. Now they say they will prioritize news from local outlets. These changes are coming amid accusations that Facebook algorithms prioritized misleading news and misinformation, thereby influencing politics in the US and other parts of the world. This latest addition will allow users see more posts from local sources. This way they can see “topics that have a direct impact on you and your community and discover what’s happening in your local area.” This means “if you follow a local publisher or if someone shares a local story, it may show up higher in newsfeed.” This update is to launch first in the United States before…

When I first started at CFM Group 5 months ago, I was a different person. The work I’ve done, the people I’ve met, and the opportunities I’ve been given have shaped the way I think about myself and my future career. That is why I wanted to share 10 things that I have learnt from my internship. Although some lessons speak to the unique culture of digital marketing, I think there are valuable tips that any intern can follow. 1) Be yourself We all have our little quirks, and it’s what makes work fun. Of course at the start I was very nervous and conscious of making the right impression. However as time went on I finally relaxed, and my work became more creative, my relationship with clients become more relaxed and the marketing campaigns became more successful. 2) Pay attention to detail It doesn’t take long for anyone senior…

Formula 1 is the fastest growing sport on social media and last season was the first under the management of American-based Liberty Media which is keen to develop the sport and attract new audiences. Earlier in the year, Formula 1 reported that they ended the year with 11.9 million followers on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Youtube channels- a rise of 54.9% compared to 2016. This figure reflects how much ground the sport has had to make up. Previous managers Bernie Ecclestone had little time for social media so it came as no surprise they were ousted in 2017. Liberty have taken considerable steps to explore those platforms. Video content performed best on Twitter with over 64 million views representing a 165 percent year-on-year increase while on Instagram, Formula 1 feed almost doubled to 3.8 million. Putting it in perspective, poster boy of Formula 1, Lewis Hamilton currently has 5.7 million…

The saying goes, ‘If you can’t say anything nice, then you shouldn’t say anything at all.’ Since social media came into our lives, it has created the easiest way to say something nasty directly to a person. Social media is filled with persons who hide behind their screens to troll strangers, celebrities, companies and organizations. Most of the social media giants operate as hosts rather than publishers as such they are exempt from being liable for user-generated content if they act to remove content when notified. Facebook, Twitter and other social media giants are obligated to remove illegal content when they are informed of its presence on their platforms. Once a user reports a piece of content, it is reviewed by a human and removed once it is found to violate the terms and conditions of the platform. Beyond the human review, several of these social media platforms have an…
